Prof. Dr. Peter Kroneck, Biochemist

What motivates you to teach in the EES major at UCF?

For me teaching Science means a lot of fun. It remains a permanent challenge to convince (young) people that Chemistry is a central science.

Please describe briefly the subject you teach within EES.

Whether we like it or not, we live in a “Chemical World”, composed of atoms, ions and molecules, full of surprises in terms of properties, three-dimensional structures, and reactivities. We want to understand basic features and principles, and we want to apply those to explore the essential elements of life on Earth, their biogeochemical cycles, and the chemistry of important environmental processes.

What else would you like to share about you and your course?

Originally trained as a chemist at the University of Basel, I moved into the interdisciplinary field of Bioinorganic Chemistry, getting in touch with the Life Sciences, all the way from Microbiology to Structural Biology and Biochemistry. Having worked in institutions around the world you might hear my advice.
